Sioux Culture
The Wampanoag Tribe's culture was very similar to the Sioux's. Both tribe's cultures were heavily based on their religion. The respect they had for Mother Earth was something that influenced every aspect of their lives. Nothing went to waste. The Wampanoag and Sioux both used animal skin for clothing, instruments, and shelters. The animal bones were used for tools. Even the bladders of animals were used as water containers. When foraging for food, the Wampanoag and Sioux took only what they needed and nothing more. Every aspect of their life related to their respect for nature, and the land they lived upon.
One difference between the Sioux and Wampanoag culture was that the Sioux relied heavily upon one animal, the Buffalo. Back in the times where the Sioux roamed the western plains, buffalo dotted the horizon. These animals were used for every aspect of their life. The Buffalo's skin was used to cover their teepees and for clothes, the meat was used for food and the bones were used for tools. Every aspect of the Sioux's life was helped by the buffalo. And for this reason, the Sioux praised them above all other animals.
Below is a Buffalo dance the Sioux tribe often performed for luck before hunting the buffalo and a picture of a buffalo itself. What does their dancing look like? Is there anything these dancers do to look more like animals?
